Social Emotional Learning at GPA

Dina and Wally

In our preschool and kindergarten classrooms, we utilize The Incredible Years® Dinosaur School Program to foster a positive and supportive learning environment. This program is designed to support all students through engaging 20- to 30-minute circle time lessons delivered 2-3 times a week. These lessons are followed by small group activities and ongoing promotion of skills throughout the day. The curriculum covers essential topics such as classroom rules, understanding and managing feelings, problem-solving, anger management, and building friendships. Our goals with this program include enhancing students' attention and cooperation, improving their ability to self-regulate, and developing empathy for others. By learning these skills, children will be better equipped to navigate social interactions and contribute positively to their classroom community.

Second Step

In our first, second, and third-grade classrooms, we are proud to implement the Second Step program, which is designed to enhance students' social-emotional learning (SEL) and character development. While academics are crucial, we also focus on nurturing essential life skills that support your child's overall growth and future success. Second Step provides a structured approach to SEL, emphasizing five key competencies: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness. Each grade level engages with age-appropriate lessons that build on these skills, helping students become more confident, empathetic, and capable of managing their emotions and interactions. Through interactive lessons and activities, students learn about goal-setting, emotional regulation, empathy, and problem-solving. By integrating these lessons into our curriculum, we aim to equip students with the values and skills they need to thrive both in school and beyond.
